Urban Forest, New Town Kolkata
A Living Green-Blue Lung for the City
Spread across 16 acres, the Urban Forest was envisioned as the ecological heart of New Town, Kolkata—a living green and blue lung that balances the city’s rapidly increasing urban density. Conceived as a resilient natural ecosystem, the project creates an expansive open space that not only enhances environmental quality but also reconnects people with nature.
Design Philosophy
Rather than creating a conventional landscaped park, the project was designed as a self-sustaining ecological system. The objective was to establish a forest that, once matured, would function much like a natural woodland, requiring minimal human intervention while continuously supporting biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and climate resilience.
Water as the Framework
At the heart of the forest lies a central lake, created by excavating the site. The excavated soil was strategically reused to raise the surrounding ground levels, effectively preventing waterlogging across the landscape.
A unique ring-shaped canal network radiates from the lake, circulating water throughout the site before returning to its source. During the establishment phase, water is gently pumped from the lake into this network, ensuring healthy plant growth. As the forest matures, the ecosystem gradually becomes self-reliant.
Branching from the primary canal are numerous smaller triangular canals that weave through the plantation. These channels perform a dual role—supplying water to vegetation while also acting as an efficient drainage network during heavy monsoon rainfall.
Geometry Inspired by Nature
The plantation follows an innovative triangular planting geometry. Individual triangles combine to form star-shaped clusters, and these clusters collectively create an extensive forest matrix across the site.
Each planting cluster is carefully composed with a layered mix of fast-growing pioneer species, slow-growing canopy trees, understory vegetation, and shrubs. As the forest evolves, these species naturally establish ecological succession, allowing the woodland to mature with minimal maintenance.
More than 600 species of native and adaptive plants have been introduced, creating exceptional botanical diversity and ensuring year-round ecological richness.
Immersive Forest Experience
A continuous pedestrian trail meanders alongside the canals and extends deep into the dense plantation, allowing visitors to experience the forest from within. Resting decks and benches positioned along the water’s edge provide quiet spaces for reflection, observation, and relaxation.
The landscape around the central lake has been intentionally kept simple and understated, allowing indigenous grasses and spontaneous vegetation to flourish naturally. This restrained approach strengthens the site’s ecological character while preserving its natural beauty.
A Thriving Urban Ecosystem
Over the years, the Urban Forest has evolved into a vibrant habitat supporting an impressive range of biodiversity. The site regularly attracts numerous resident and migratory bird species, while flowering trees, fruit-bearing plants, butterflies, and insects contribute to a healthy and dynamic ecosystem.
The richness of flowering, the diversity of fruits, and the abundance of wildlife have transformed the forest into a cherished destination for morning walkers, nature enthusiasts, and the local community—demonstrating how thoughtfully designed landscapes can restore ecological balance within a rapidly growing city.
The Urban Forest stands today as a living example of how ecological infrastructure can shape healthier, more resilient urban environments, proving that cities can grow while allowing nature to flourish.
